December movie update

Here are the films that Pete and I have received from Lovefilm.com and watched on TV and DVD over the past few months in reverse order, with my ratings out of ten from my movie list on the IMDB.

Pitoche (2010) 7
Funny French comedy starring the great Catherine Deneuve as a trophy wife who takes over her husbands business when he falls ill.

Retreat (2011) 7
A thriller that didn't quite hit the mark despite featuring a very fit looking Jamie Bell.

Shutter Island (2010) 8
I enjoyed this and understood the ending perfectly. Why are people confused?

Happy Endings (2005) 7
A surprisingly good comedy with a few nice twists.

You Again (2010) 1
Awful, rubbish, stupid, lazy, shit.

Ghostbusters (1984) 6
Not quite as good as remember, but fun all the same.

The Girl Cut in Two (2007) 5
Silly story.

Chico & Rita (2010) 7
Interesting animation and great soundtrack - though the story could have had been structured far better.

Shine a Light (2008) 7
Rolling Stones documentary/performance film.

The Line of Beauty (2006) 7
Gay TV mini-series. Strange ending.

Water for Elephants (2011) 5
Bad acting, rubbish story. It gets a couple of points for the CGI elephant.

Star Trek (2009) 6
Hmmm - still not sure.

Rango (2011) 7
Amazing animation and not bad story.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011) 7
A fitting end to the saga.

I've Loved You So Long (2008) 8
Depressing French film - but clever and well acted.

Attack the Block (2011) 7
Pretty funny horror. Loved some of the characters, especially Pest.

Morning Glory (2010) 5
Full of cliches and stupid over-acting.

  1. Once again, I've only seen a relative handful of these at cinema, Stephen:-

Potiche - although saw it as recent as this June, when I'd given it a 6/10, had to look up IMDb to remind me of what it was about. Now that I have, a bit surprised at my low score as memory is that I'd thought more of it. Now, like you, I'd give it a 7.

Shutter Island - I'm with you again in giving it an 8 - but (unless I'm thinking of another recent film of that ilk) I have a recollection of the melodramatic music soundtrack being over-obtrusive, which seems to be quite a regular fault with Scorsese in diminishing the stature of his films.

Ghostbusters - well, is there anyone who has NOT seen it? I haven't viewed it again since all-those-year-back, and I don't particularly want to. I remember it irritating me in being what passes as 'zany', but which I find mind-numbingly silly. This film came out way before I started giving scores, but based on recollection alone I'd be generous in giving it a 4.

Shine a Light - when I last visited my sister in the Summer she'd been given this DVD but had only felt indifference on viewing it. So I put it on - and I too found it unremarkable. I only watched about 2/3 of it - and, despite my not seeing it on a cinema screen, on DVD evidence I'd rate it a 5. (Not as good or as interesting as Scorsese's recent 'George Harrison' compilation.)

Star Trek - Never been a fan, but for some masochistic reason have seen all the feature films. Don't know why I put myself through the ordeal and the expense. 3/10!

HPDH2 - also seen all the HPs but I've found them all very visually tiring to watch, this one being just like all the rest. Maybe I lack a young man's energy. I certainly lack any enthusiasm. In terms of personal 'enjoyment' - just a 4 at best.

I've Loved You So Long - When I compile my Top 10 of the year, this will surely be there. Yes, a good 8/10.

Attack the Block - one of this year's mini-satisfactions. I agree with you again - a pleasingly worthy 7.

And out of the ones you've mentioned which I most wish I'd seen? - 'Happy Endings' and 'Chico & Rita', the latter especially, as it has got some good reviews.

    .....till 2012 then?
