Some coming out stories
Coming out isn't always about a nervous conversation with someone and as there are some sad stories around, here are some alternatives...
I'm hanging out with my mom. She's asking me about girls. I hesitate.
My plan: To come out to her.
What actually happened: After a long, melodramatic intro into how devastated I'd be if it weren't true that she'd love me no matter what, she replied with a simple: "You're gay right? I already knew that!"
Irritated by repeated warnings from my dad "not to get girls pregnant" while I'm in college, we begin to argue.
My plan: Win the argument.
What actually happened: I didn't plan to come out, but eventually it slipped in my reply: "I won't be getting any girls pregnant because I'm gay."
I guess I won.
As a college freshman, I fell in love with a boy, a senior.
My plan: Go to his house and hang out.
What actually happened: I stood in front of him, paralyzed. I kissed him on the forehead and ran out of the house, terrified.
After that: He showed up at my dorm and let's just say he was my first boyfriend.
This guy who visited the Coming Out Group at my university in 1993 came from Czechoslovakia. We talked about the benefits of "coming out."
He asked "What do you mean 'to come out'? You mean TO TELL THE TRUTH!!?"

R U Coming Out
I came across a website via Twitter called 'R U Coming Out'. It helps guys come out, if they want to - it's not about pushing guys to come out of the closet, it's all about support and shared experiences.
Coming Out can be a hard thing to do. It's a complicated process which can cause feelings of confusion, doubt, guilt, shame, excitement, fear, relief and anxiety. There is no rule book explaining the best way and time to tell your loved ones that you are gay, lesbian or bisexual. That's because there is no 'right' way or time. The rucomingout project hopes to become a valuable resource for those who are living life in the closet.
Take a look - they are providing a worthwhile service.

The end of the world
I've been contemplating ending this blog. Well, if the loving religious Catholic people in Britain are to be believed, if same sex marriage enters into law, the world will crack in two and therefore my blog will be irrelevant. A few comments in recent days from the British Catholic leadership on same-sex marriage:
"would reduce the significance of marriage"
"grotesque"
"shame the United Kingdom in the eyes of the world"
These are simply stupid statements and make no sense at all. I can see that, in say 20 years, people will look back at the comments made by Catholic leaders and actually laugh. One day they will be seen as the ludicrous statements that they clearly are. Marriage is all about love and it existed long before modern "made up" religions, so why would it be devalued for man/woman combinations if they were some man/man or woman/woman marriages? Think about it... marriage isn't going to be devalued by a tiny percentage being gay ones. The straight couples are never going to think "there's no point getting married as it's been devalued by those gay people who clearly just want to get married for the tax benefits (HA!)".
They insist that marriage is purely for "the procreation and education of offspring". I assume that the Catholic guys will be advocating fines and imprisonment for couples that do not make babies. I'm all for that!
The Pope is against gay marriage completely - he sees it as:
"damaging to the stability of society"
"countercultural"
What a fool. But I have no respect for the man anyway, let's not forget that the current Pope once wrote to all Bishops around the world insisting that they cover up any pedophile crimes by their Priests or risk being excommunicated. What nice people these religious types are.

Who would have thought it
If you asked me a week ago what I thought of Joey Barton and I would have said: "mindless thug". My views have changed a little. On BBC3 the other night, there was a documentary on gay footballers presented by Amal Fashanu who is the niece of the late Justin Fashanu - the only out gay English football professional.
No top footballers would take part apart from Joey Barton and a few from Millwall. Joey revealed that his uncle is gay and said he felt sorry for those players who were not comfortable discussing homosexuality. His view was that there were “archaic figures” in the footballing world who would discriminate against gay players, but that he expected an out gay player in Britain in the next decade.
Praise has to go for the guys at Millwall for speaking a lot of sense. They said that they wouldn't care if another player was gay and would take the micky out of him in the same way they "pick" on other players. It's all part of the dressing room banter.
For me, it wasn't a great documentary, far too much filler, but it's always nice to see Anton Hysén. I am disappointed that a few top Premiership players were not brave enough to go on camera. It's quite pathetic actually. And the FA should have put a top person forward to be interviewed and state their position clearly. They failed badly in my opinion.
Justin's brother, John Fashanu didn't come out of it well either. I understand that his brother could have handled his coming out better, but the 80's were a world away from today's world where coming out is seen as far less of an issue for most people. John's comments were not helpful at the time and he doesn't appear to regret them too much.
It sounded to me that players who were to come out would probably have support from most colleagues, but the hassle from away fans could destroy them. Anton Hysén plays for a small team in a more liberal country and is currently just milking his celebrity (so would I) rather than concern himself with football crowds.
In all of this, let's not forget the immense skill that Justin had. This goal says it all...

Michael Ball... no, not the singer
Former Everton and Manchester City defender Michael Ball has been fined £6,000 by the Football Association for homophobic comments posted on Twitter. He has also been released by his club Leicester.
Ball messaged Coronation Street actor Antony Cotton, who is openly gay and plays Sean Tully in the soap. Cotton was appearing in I'm a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!
Ball wrote: "That ****ing queer. Get back to your sewing machine in Corrie you moaning bastard."
I have no sympathy for Ball. He is a sad little man, but I actually think the fine should have been more and the Police involved.
It wasn't a witty, silly throwaway comment; it was filled with hate. You don't call someone a f***ing anything and not mean something deeper. And he made it far worse by messaging the actor directly. What is his problem?!
If any public figure wrote something like this about any religious group, he would possibly have been arrested. Also, he should really have known that his "thoughts" would be seen by many people.
The topic of gay footballers is for another day, but immature, pathetic, bigoted fools are holding professional gay footballers back by promoting hatred. The man is a fool.

David Testo
Another professional coming out story emerged yesterday. David Testo, a recently retired US footballer came out publicly. Welcome out David!
Former pro soccer player David Testo has only one regret about going public with his homosexuality: He wishes he had done it a long time ago. “I really do regret not coming out publicly earlier,” the 30-year-old midfielder, who also played with the Vancouver Whitecaps and Richmond Kickers of the USL and Columbus Crew of the MLS, told Radio-Canada.
“It’s like carrying around a secret, you know, and carrying around luggage and just never being allowed to be yourself.”
The North Carolina native said he now feels more confident and mature and is ready to speak publicly about his sexual orientation.
Testo said he had wrestled with making his sexual orientation public for a long time. He added that he was also regrets not thanking his partner as he accepted the team’s most valuable player award in 2009.
“The one person I wanted to thank the most, I couldn’t,” he said. “I just didn’t feel comfortable at the time.”
Testo said his sexual orientation wasn’t a secret among his family, friends or teammates. In the interview, he talked about the difficulty of being a gay athlete, both for himself and his teammates.

Jonathan de Falco
A few months ago, I blogged about the cute and supremely confident Anton Hysen - a professional football who is out and proud. He's enjoying gay life to the full it seems (via his blog) - appearing in magazines, on radio, lots of TV, film premiers, working with clothes designers, etc etc. I like the guy and it seems he is really genuine.
With footballers in mind, there is news of another footballer coming out, but this time there is a twist to the story...
A professional footballer has made a new career using his tackle, by becoming a gay porn star. Former Belgian professional footballer Jonathan de Falco, formerly of Racing Mechelen and Oud-Heverlee Leuven, has assumed the name Stany Falcone to follow his dream of becoming a gay porn star.
The 26-year-old told the Antwerp Gazette: "I felt more and more content with who I really was. I had to really go on, but after a conversation with the club, we agreed that I should leave the club earlier and I would change my life. The football world is not ready for gay players. There is too much prejudice and generally low tolerance. Since I was 20 I have been in gay circles, but when I played soccer, nobody noticed anything. If my orientation would have been known, there would have undoubtedly problems."
So I have have been thinking. There are around 4000 professional footballers in England. If I use a very conservative 3% gay ratio (the gaytio*), then that means there are 120 closeted guys playing football. It saddens me to think that there are so many guys who have to live a lie, cant be themselves and ultimately cant be happy. I hope that the experience of Anton Hysen will be positive enough to allow some guys to say "I'm gay, I play football, so what?!".

Outed for liking porn?
It seems that some gay porn sites are getting serious with people that download films illegally. Corbin Fisher, home of the all-American boys doing fun things to/with each other is planning to take action against individuals and could, according to some sites, end up 'outing' guys. It could be interesting to see some counter-action whereby guys privacy is affected.
So guys young and old could hear from the lawyers soon and have some interesting questions from friends and family! I assume that they are really after the serial downloaders, but some people are bound to get caught out.
To wind up the Corbin Fisher police, here is a picture of one of their 'models' - this is Nick and I've seen his picture a few times and I have to admit, he's ****ing gorgeous!

Secondly, perhaps consider going to a support group or finding a friend who can support you. The "problem" will not go away by itself and life is too short to be depressed. If your friends and family don't have a clue about your sexuality, I would be surprised and you may well find out that they are more accepting than you think.
I know people who are closeted in a similar way (at first I thought it was one who had left the comment) - I am sure that it is depressing and must limit their ability to be happy. I don't intend turning the blog into Ask Stephen as I don't have all of the answers. I am certainly not a perfect "out and proud" gay man as I am not out at work.

Why did you come out at that point? I had had enough of telling lies and it was getting me down. Also, 2 guys I knew had just come out and their experience helped.
Are you out at work? Not my current place of work, but have been in previous jobs.
If not, why not? I made a decision not to come out and in hindsight, this decision was a mistake as again, I am lying to people I like. Not sure I could tell them now.
If you’ve been outed unwillingly, who did it? It's happened, but I didn't mind - it can be useful actually.

He comes across as surprisingly normal in interviews despite being a porn 'actor' and I wonder if he could have been a 'proper' actor if his life hadn't followed a different course. He got into a lot of trouble (and got a lot of people into trouble) by lying about his age and appearing in a porno when he was only 17. He's definitely a rebel and at 24 is considered to be a sex veteran!

Colton Haynes
I recently read a news story about 21 year old actor and model Colton Haynes. A few years he took part in this photo shoot which featured some pretty hot boy on boy action. Now I appreciate that young actors will do what they need to do to get noticed, but a straight guy isn't going to French kiss another model is he. He's supposed to be dating some sexy females, but I cant help but think that he might be gay. I know... I'm bad.
Here are a couple of pictures of this sexy guy and a couple of the images that got some areas of the press excited. I think they are pretty exciting pictures myself!
The copyright Police have been on to me, so instead of the actual pictures, here is a link to some nice pictures of Colton and the gay kisses are here. It seems that Colton is very keen to remove the gay kiss images from the net, in the same way that Kevin McDaid (boyfriend of Westlife's Mark Feehily) had gay porn images removed.

It seems that Colton is very keen to remove the gay kiss images from the net, in the same way that Kevin McDaid (boyfriend of Westlife's Mark Feehily) had gay porn images removed.

The best and worst gay films... so far - Update #1
Further to this previous posting, here is an update on most of the gay themed films I have seen. This is my list, taken from my ratings on IMDB:
Presque rien 9
A brilliant film on so many levels with some great acting and it just happens that the lead characters are cute guys getting it on.
C.R.A.Z.Y. 9
This French Canadian film struck many chords with me as I identified with the lead character Zac - feeling like the odd one out in a family with older brothers.
Milk 9
So much has been said about this great film - it really makes you think.
Get Real 8
A feel good movie with some really funny lines. The lead actor, Ben Silverstone plays a great part.
Krámpack 8
One gay and one straight friend figure at who they are over one hot summer on the Spanish coast. "Krámpack" is their word for mutual masturbation.
La mala educación (Bad education) 8
From the Spanish film maker extraordinaire Almodovar - too complex to describe the plot! Stars Gael GarcÃa Bernal.
Just a question of love 8
A tender gay love story. This one is unusual as the lead character is actually played by a gay actor (Cyrille Thouvenin).
À cause d'un garçon (You'll get over it) 7
Tough and touching coming out story.
Grande école 7
The cute Salim Kechiouche pursues a college student who is unsure of his sexuality.
A Single Man 7
An interesting and arty film with the great Colin Firth and star-in-the-making Nicholas Hoult.

Teens in lurve.
Les roseaux sauvages (The wild reeds) 7
Coming out story set in 1960's rural France.
Dorian Blues 7
Witty coming out story with some funny lines. Worth 7.5 really.
I Love You Phillip Morris 7
A great story that may have made a better drama, but funny all the same.
Maurice 7
This would have been the first gay film most gay guys my age would have seen - and all would have fallen for Scudder.
Mysterious Skin 7
Drugs, violence and sex.
Edge of Seventeen 7
A bit laboured at times, but lead actor is cute and story OK.
Beautiful Thing 7
Oh come on, everyone knows this one!
Shelter 7
A believable gay story set among surfer dudes.
Defying Gravity 6
A nice story, but it's a shame the main actors are so awful!
Like A Brother 6
Cute lads in Paris - but a bit amateurish and too short.
My Beautiful Laundrette 6
Not sure whether to include this - but it's a film that appears on Film 4 sometimes.
Cowboys and Angels 6
Sweet Irish film - worth a view.
Head On 6
Heavy stuff with drugs and violence, but worth checking out just to see Alex Dimitriades with a chubby!
The Fluffer 6
A story set in the L.A. porn industry - silly but watchable.
Latter Days 6
L.A. gay guy who sleeps with anything falls for a surprisingly fit Mormon.
Brokeback Mountain 5
I think that I am meant to like this one, but I found it slow, dull and unbelievable.
Ha-Buah (The bubble) 5
Depressing.
Mr Right 5
Some poor acting and stereotypes everywhere - could have been so much better.
Les chansons d'amour 5
I don't like musicals very much, so this was always going to suffer it terms of rating. A cute clip here though.
The Living End 4
Just not very good.
Love Is the Devil 3
Possibly Daniel Craigs only really bad film.
Greek Pete 1
A simply awful film with benefit scrounging druggies and a gay rent boy. Avoid.
