December movie update

It's been ages since my last movie update, so here are the films that Pete and I have received from Lovefilm.com and watched on TV and DVD over the past couple of months - with my ratings out of ten from my movie list on IMDB.

The Nightmare Before Christmas 8

Cowboys & Angels 7
A good(ish) gay film... wow!

The Hangover 7
Silly but funny.

In the Loop 7

Ha-Buah (The Bubble) 5
A poor gay film.

The Ballad of Jack and Rose 5
I don't think I like anything that Daniel Day-Lewis has been in!

17 Again 7
Pretty funny and nowhere near as bad as I thought it might be. Zac is so fit!

Coco avant Chanel 6

Is Anybody There? 7

Shi mian mai fu (House of Flying Daggers) 7

The Boat That Rocked 5
A wasted opportunity to make a funny film about pirate radio in the 1960's.

Entre les murs (The Class) 7

The Elephant Man 8*

Bedazzled 4

JFK 8

Rudo y Cursi 8
Funny and features two cute actors.

When Harry Met Sally... 9*

Anvil! The Story of Anvil 5
Could have been good, but the joke ran out very quickly.

The Matrix Reloaded 4
Rubbish, padded out with overlong fighting scenes.

The Man Who Wasn't There 7

Carry on Screaming! 7
Classic British comedy. Harry H Corbett was a fine actor.

Bigga Than Ben 6
Not a great film, but Ben Barnes is gorgeous

* I've seen these films before, but thought I would include the ratings as I watched them again recently.

  1. Very interesting. Could write loads about each of the films you list and your ratings - I've seen most of them on the cinema screen. But I'd agree with you about 'The Boat that Rocked' though I think your rating was rather generous. (I score films in a 'register' after I've seen them, though I only include films seen in the cinema.) I gave 'Boat' a rating of 1.5/10, the lowest rated film of any film I saw in 2008.
Sorry you don't care for D.D-Lewis. I think he's an absolutely phenomenal actor, but it would be boring if we all shared the same tastes. [Piece of trivia - When I lived in Oxford my next-door flat neighbour was DDL's former headmaster. - Wow, eh? ;-) ]
My own favourite 'Carry On' has always been 'Camping' - The whole gang's there and that makes it feel so 'cosy' - though at that time we weren't aware of the fierce bickerings and rivalries between the cast members. When it first came out there were queues right round the cinema block to see it. Hardly seems believeable now.
'Cowboys and Angels' sounds interesting. Must look out for it.
Could write LOTS more, but 'nuff for now. Will look out with keen interest for your future postings especially re films. Cheers, pal.

  2. Carry On Screaming is great - partly because it is so different from the other films. I do love Carry On Abroad... "Ells Bells"

  3. p.s.

I think I gave a higher score for the Boat That Rocked mainly due to my interest in pirate radio history. It's probably more like a 3/10!

  4. Stephen: Re 'Boat' - Though I lived through the launch of the pirates and their subsequent criminalisation, it wasn't just the factual, historical inaccuracies that got me (a little creative licence is no bad thing), the nation at large was hardly supportive of the pirates, in fact generally they were regarded as a damned nuisance at the time - even by me as a then pop-loving 20 year old! I just found the entire film so false, so lazy, so episodic, so devoid of any sympathetic characters - and so bloody irritating. Kept looking at my watch every 5 mins!

  6. Yes, Stephen, (with thanks to Daniel) - how could I forget? ['Ell's Bells indeed!] - A Very Happy Christmas to you and to those who surround you, whether you celebrate it or not.

  7. You gave the Hangover 7?! I thought it'd be a 9 easy. :)
